Comilla’s khadi fabric earns GI status

Comilla’s traditional Khadi fabric has officially been recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, marking a significant milestone for the region’s cultural heritage. The recognition was announced at an event hosted by the Ministry of Industries at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
This makes Khadi the second Comilla-origin product to receive GI status, following the earlier recognition of the district’s famed roshmalai. Locals are now hopeful that Bijoypur’s traditional pottery—the third iconic product from the area—will soon be recognized as well. Comilla’s Khadi, known for its artistic flair and historical roots, traces its origins back to 1921 during the Indian subcontinent’s non-cooperation movement, when Mahatma Gandhi himself visited Comilla and spun Khadi to promote local production and self-reliance.
Today, more than 300 Khadi shops operate in Comilla, and the fabric has found appreciation both locally and internationally. Although institutional support has waned over time, dedicated entrepreneurs have sustained the industry, incorporating modern design elements.
