Fakir Fashion launches ‘Greener by Design’ sustainability report

Fakir Fashion Ltd has unveiled its first sustainability report titled “Greener by Design,” marking a significant step toward transparency and responsible manufacturing in Bangladesh’s apparel sector.

The report was launched at an event held at the Sheraton Dhaka, attended by industry leaders, global brands, and development partners. Speakers at a panel discussion emphasized that sustainability is no longer limited to compliance but has become a key factor in global competitiveness.

Representatives from leading international brands such as H&M and Inditex, along with buyers including C&A, Tom Tailor, NEXT, New Yorker, and El Corte Inglés, highlighted the growing importance of integrating sustainable practices while maintaining business growth.

According to the report, Fakir Fashion achieved notable environmental progress, including a 19% reduction in waste, 75% decline in greenhouse gas intensity, and a 13% decrease in energy consumption. The company also harvested 11.7 million liters of rainwater and continued investing in workforce development.

Max Tunon of the International Labor Organization noted that adhering to environmental and social standards should be seen as a business advantage rather than a cost.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Hasan Arif of the Export Promotion Bureau emphasized the need for a strategic shift toward ESG practices and man-made fibers to sustain export growth.

Mohammad Hatem of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association described the initiative as a milestone, noting that environmental and social accountability are now global imperatives.

Managing Director Fakir Kamruzzaman Nahid reaffirmed the company’s vision, stating, “Our promise is simple: to build sustainable clothes for a sustainable future.”

Industry observers view the initiative as a reflection of a broader shift in Bangladesh’s apparel sector, where sustainability is increasingly becoming a strategic differentiator.
