Chinese commerce minister with large business delegation will visit Bangladesh

China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao will visit Bangladesh from 31st May to 2nd June 2025, leading a 300-member business delegation—the largest ever to visit the country. The visit is expected to boost bilateral trade and investment, particularly in sectors such as ready-made garments, textiles, agro-processing, ICT, electronics, and pharmaceuticals. Five sector-specific match-making sessions will be held between Chinese and Bangladeshi businesses to explore collaboration opportunities, especially in man-made fibers, green textiles, and home textiles. The delegation includes major Chinese industry representatives and follows increased engagement since Bangladesh’s recent investment summit in China.
Bangladeshi authorities, including the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), and the Ministry of Commerce, are preparing logistical and administrative support. A business conference will be inaugurated by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on 1 June. On 2 June, the Bangladesh–China Joint Commission on Economy and Trade will convene, with Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed and Wang Wentao leading their respective sides.
Though no major agreements are expected, a memorandum of understanding may be signed to form a joint working group for facilitating trade. Currently, Bangladesh’s exports to China remain low at $715 million in FY2022–23, while imports from China total nearly $28 billion. To attract Chinese investment, BEZA is developing multiple economic zones dedicated to Chinese enterprises.
