Jute exporters face $100/ton extra freight cost

Bangladeshi jute exporters are incurring an additional $100 per ton in freight costs after India restricted jute imports through land ports, forcing shipments via sea to Nhava Sheva Port and then overland to Kolkata. Exporters say the detour has eroded competitiveness, prompting industry leaders to seek government compensation.

Bangladesh Jute Mills Association has also urged tax relief and restoration of cash incentives, warning that recent policy changes and India’s anti-dumping duties threaten the sector’s viability. Finance ministry officials acknowledged the impact and said proposals are under review.
