BUTEX holds first convocation after 15 years, graduating over 4,100 students

Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) marked a historic milestone by holding its first-ever convocation, 15 years after its establishment. The ceremony took place on Saturday, December 27, from morning to noon at the university’s central playground, with 4,126 graduates formally receiving their degrees.
The campus witnessed a festive atmosphere as graduates, faculty members, university officials, staff, and guardians gathered to celebrate the landmark occasion.
Addressing the convocation, BUTEX Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Julhas Uddin described the event as a memorable chapter in the university’s history. “This convocation is not merely about awarding degrees; it is a recognition of the graduates’ perseverance, dedication, and competence,” he said. He also highlighted BUTEX’s growing contribution to Bangladesh’s economy and textile sector, outlining the university’s vision for future advancement.
The ceremony was presided over by Education Adviser Professor Dr C R Abrar, who noted that in a relatively short period, BUTEX has demonstrated how specialised education, research, and innovation can transform an institution into a key driver of the national economy. He described BUTEX as a reliable centre for producing skilled, ethical, and leadership-oriented professionals for the textile and apparel industry.
As special guest, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr S M A Faiez praised BUTEX’s journey from its inception to becoming a full-fledged university within 15 years. He commended its role in developing globally competitive human resources for the textile sector, a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s foreign exchange earnings, and urged new graduates to embrace responsibility, self-transformation, and challenges as opportunities.
The convocation address was delivered by Professor Dr Jungai Wang, Chair Professor of Fiber Science and Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Members of the BUTEX Syndicate and Academic Council, deans of various faculties, and senior academics were also present at the ceremony.
