AAFA launches ‘250 Years of Fashion’ platform celebrating American apparel heritage

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) has launched a new digital archival platform, “250 Years of Fashion,” to celebrate the people, brands, and innovations that have shaped American fashion and culture over the past 250 years.

The initiative is part of AAFA’s support for America250, the bipartisan celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The platform highlights the histories of iconic American brands, including Levi Strauss & Co., Gap Inc., Ralph Lauren Corporation, New Balance Athletics, Inc., Columbia Sportswear, and Fruit of the Loom, while showcasing the stories behind classic products such as blue jeans, khakis, and the Bean Boot.

Developed through contributions from AAFA members, the platform explores how fashion has evolved alongside American society, reflecting innovation, entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, and cultural change across generations.

“Every article of clothing, every shoe, and every accessory carries a story,” said Steve Lamar, President and CEO of AAFA. He noted that the initiative offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the heritage of iconic brands that have helped shape the nation’s identity, economy, creativity, and culture.

As part of the project, AAFA is also inviting industry stakeholders to contribute to a virtual time capsule, sharing their vision for what the fashion industry could look like in 2076, when the United States marks its tricentennial anniversary. The association will continue sharing historical stories and industry reflections throughout the year.
