Number of overseas professionals are increasing to work in Bangladesh

An increasing number of foreign nationals are seeking work permits in Bangladesh due to a shortage of skilled managers and an education system not aligned with industrial needs. In FY 2022-23, the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) approved 16,303 applications from 101 countries, an 8% increase from the previous year. Of these, 6,256 were new permits and 10,047 were renewals. Nationals from India, China, Sri Lanka, and Belarus received the most permits.

Industry insiders say foreigners are hired for their skills and industriousness, which contribute significantly to industrial development. Mohsina Yasmin of BIDA noted that these professionals fill critical skills gaps and comply with local laws and taxes. Abdul Matlub Ahmad of the Indo-Bangla Chamber of Commerce highlighted the preference for highly skilled professionals, particularly in the garment and automobile sectors. However, this trend underscores the need for better local education and training.

Foreign professionals in Bangladesh sent home $137 million in 2022, but estimates suggest much higher figures due to unregistered workers. Economists like Khondaker Golam Moazzem emphasize the need for quality education to reduce dependency on foreign nationals. Ferdaus Ara Begum from the Business Initiative Leading Development pointed out the skills gap and the tendency of skilled graduates to leave the country.
