INDITEX significantly increased air shipment to avoid delay

Inditex, Zara’s parent company, has significantly increased its reliance on air freight from India and Bangladesh to its logistics hub in Spain to avoid delays caused by disruptions in Red Sea shipping routes.

Air freight usage rose to 70% of shipments from India and 31% from Bangladesh, leading to a 37% increase in transport emissions over the past year. While Inditex claims to use sea freight for most shipments, it cites exceptional circumstances for the shift. This trend highlights challenges in balancing fast fashion’s supply chain needs with its climate goals, as air freight has far higher carbon emissions than shipping.
