10% rise in container handling in Chittogong port in Aug-Oct
BTJ Desk Report
Chattagong Port recorded a 10.21% year-on-year increase in container handling between August and October, managing 8.30 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) compared to 7.54 lakh TEUs in the same period last year. Of these, 4.50 lakh TEUs were inbound, while the rest were outbound.
The rise is attributed to the clearance of containers delayed due to political unrest since mid-July. Despite the container growth, overall cargo and ship handling at the port declined during this period. The data includes activity from the port’s jetties, Kamalapur Inland Container Depot in Dhaka, and Pangaon Inland Container Terminal in Keraniganj, according to the Chittagong Port Authority.
