Bangladesh prepares to attract increased Chinese FDI

Bangladesh and China have strengthened their people-to-people cooperation through a series of MoUs signed between their academic and medical institutions during the launch of the “China-Bangladesh People-to-People Exchange Year: Yunnan Education and Health Promotion” at Dhaka University.

Agreements were signed between institutions like Dhaka University and Yunnan Peking Cancer Hospital, as well as Dhaka Medical College and Kunming Medical University for medical research and training. A delegation from Yunnan Province (12 universities, 6 medical institutions) visited Dhaka to sign 10 agreements and establish 5 joint centers with Bangladeshi universities. The event celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations and included dignitaries like the Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen and Yunnan Governor Wang Yubo.

China announced plans to accept more Bangladeshi patients in Yunnan hospitals with streamlined visas and a new direct flight between Chittagong and Yunnan. Bangladesh will export fresh mangoes to China starting in May, marking a new trade opportunity. Dhaka University highlighted growing student exchanges and Chinese government support for infrastructure, including a new female student dormitory. The event also featured cultural performances and the inauguration of the China-South Asia Youth Exchange Week, along with an education and healthcare expo.

This initiative signifies a deepening of ties in education, healthcare, trade, and cultural exchange under the Belt and Road framework.
