BKMEA calls for more training to boost women’s participation in RMG sector

Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) has stressed the need for enhanced training and skill development programs to increase the participation of women workers in Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) industry.
In a statement issued on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem highlighted the crucial contribution of women workers to the country’s garment sector and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to ensuring a safe workplace, equal opportunities and skill development.
He noted that women once accounted for nearly 75% of the RMG workforce, but the participation rate has declined slightly in recent years. The introduction of advanced technologies and automation in factories has been identified as one of the key factors, as many workers have yet to fully adapt to the new systems.
According to BKMEA, the participation of women in newly automated factories remains comparatively lower, contributing to the overall decline. At the same time, some experienced workers have returned to their hometowns after saving money during their employment and have started small businesses.
However, the association said initiatives are underway to improve workers’ skills. Under the government-supported Skills for Industry Competitiveness and Innovation Program (SICIP), about 2,140 workers have received training in BKMEA member factories and independent training centers, of whom nearly 90% are women.
BKMEA expressed hope that with greater government support for training programs, more women workers will be able to adapt to new technologies and re-enter the industry, strengthening the sector’s workforce and contributing to sustainable economic growth.
