FICCI hosts “Sustainable energy for Bangladesh”

Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) hosted a luncheon meeting on “Sustainable Energy for Bangladesh” at The Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka, gathering policymakers, industry leaders, and academics. The event featured key speakers, including Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, who emphasized the government’s efforts to promote energy efficiency and diversify energy sources.
Dr. Ijaz Hossain, former dean at BUET, delivered the keynote address, highlighting significant changes in Bangladesh’s energy consumption, notably the increased use of electricity in rural areas and the potential challenges from declining natural gas production. He warned that without drilling at least ten new gas wells annually, Bangladesh could face higher dependence on imported LNG. Gas demand is projected to reach 4,622 MMcfd by 2030, posing challenges for Petrobangla’s capacity.
Panelists, including Dr. Badrul Imam and Dr. M Rezwan Khan, discussed the role of renewable energy and geological implications of energy sourcing. Moderator Nowshad Ali facilitated discussions, with contributions from Mollah Amzad Hossain, editor of Energy and Power Magazine, who underscored the importance of public awareness on energy issues.
Recommendations from the meeting included expanding natural gas exploration, enhancing regasification terminals, diversifying energy sources, and promoting fuel competition in the transport sector. Participants expressed optimism for collaboration between the government and private sectors to address Bangladesh’s energy challenges and transition toward a sustainable energy future.
