RMG sector keen to import US man-made fibers

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has expressed interest in importing man-made fibers (polyester, nylon, etc.) from the US, a sector currently dominated by China. This move follows BGMEA’s recent plan to increase US cotton imports to reduce the trade deficit.
At a meeting with a US Embassy delegation in Dhaka recently, BGMEA leaders proposed expanding imports of American fibers and discussed related trade opportunities. The US delegation assured they would consult relevant departments.
Key points discussed:
US duty exemption: A recent US order allows Bangladeshi garments to get a 20% duty exemption if at least 20% of raw materials come from the US.
Chattogram warehouse proposal: BGMEA raised the idea of setting up a cotton warehouse near the port to speed up imports, possibly through a joint venture.
Labor rights & energy issues: BGMEA highlighted efforts to engage with workers’ federations, reform labor laws, and improve industrial harmony. The US side stressed alignment with international labor standards (ILO, EU expectations).
The meeting reflected growing efforts to strengthen bilateral trade ties and diversify sourcing of raw materials from the US, beyond cotton.
