The majority of Chattogram’s RMG factories were kept closed Sunday due to cyclone

Following the urging of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the majority of Chattogram’s garment manufacturing units kept their factories closed yesterday due to concerns over Cyclone Mocha’s potential effects.

The apex trade organization sent a notice to all Chattogram members on Saturday afternoon, sources told the media.

The notice said that the industrial units and CNG filling stations in Chattogram were not receiving any gas as a result of the suspension of supply from floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals at Maheshkhali due to the cyclone.

So, the factories in Chattogram should be kept closed for the day to prevent workers from suffering due to commute-related hardships because gas-powered factory boilers and workers’ transportation vehicles couldn’t be used.

In response to the notice, nearly 70% of garment factories in Chattogram were kept shut, media reported citing the BGMEA sources.

Due to the suspension of the LNG supply, industrial plants and CNG filling stations in Chattogram weren’t getting any gas.

Speaking to the media, BGMEA First Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam told that about 60% of the 375 garment factories in Chattogram, including those in export processing zones, were kept shut.

There are around seven lakh workers in the RMG factories in Chattogram.
