Bangladesh has proposed offering zero import tariffs on an additional 100 U.S. products, adding to the existing list of 190 zero-tariff items, as part of efforts to reduce the trade imbalance and respond to the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the U.S. under the Trump administration.
In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin emphasized that despite being one of the largest importers of U.S. cotton and a key exporter of readymade garments, Bangladesh faces a 15% tariff on its exports to the U.S., while it imposes an average of 6.10% on U.S. goods—with cotton and steel scrap already taxed at 0% and 1%, respectively.
The move aims to foster fairer trade relations and potentially reopen dialogue on preferential access for Bangladeshi exports.
