11-member commission established to reform mass media

Interim government has established an 11-member Mass Media Reform Commission led by veteran journalist Kamal Ahmed to address media-related reforms. The commission, announced in a gazette notification on November 17, 2024, is tasked with submitting a report to Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus within 90 days.

Kamal Ahmed, a seasoned journalist with prior roles at BBC and Prothom Alo, will lead a diverse team comprising professionals from various media and academic backgrounds. Key members include Titu Dutta Gupta (Deputy Editor, The Business Standard), Professor Gitiara Nasrin (Dhaka University), and Shamsul Haque Zahid (Editor, The Financial Express). Additional members represent the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB), the National Press Club, broadcast journalism, and regional reporting, alongside a student representative.

This initiative is part of broader reforms, as the government recently announced four new commissions addressing health, workers’ rights, women’s affairs, and the media. The Mass Media Reform Commission will focus on developing strategies to modernize and address challenges within the media sector, reflecting the government’s commitment to reform and transparency.
