Bangladesh launches strategic solar manufacturing venture to power green transition in RMG sector

The formal inauguration of ‘Sonnex Energie (Bangladesh) Ltd’ in Dhaka marks a major step toward Bangladesh’s renewable energy future, as the country embarks on an ambitious plan to build a 500 MW solar PV module manufacturing facility. The project, a joint venture between Solar EPC Development Ltd, Bangladesh’s leading solar solutions provider, and Sonnex Energie GmbH of Germany, is being hailed as a transformative push for green industrialization, particularly in the ready-made garment sector.

This new initiative signals a strong commitment to localize high-quality solar production, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and enable the RMG industry to meet growing global sustainability standards. The venture will focus on establishing automated assembly lines, advanced testing labs, and technical training centers, as well as regional logistics hubs to support major solar projects nationwide.

The launch event drew high-level participation from Huawei, Power China Bangladesh, Sungrow, GIZ, and Bangladesh’s Power Division, underscoring its strategic significance. Sonnex Energie GmbH, which brings over 2 GW of global manufacturing experience and advanced solar technologies, will anchor the project with innovations like PERC, N-type, and smart modules. Targeting an annual production capacity of 500 MW by 2028, with aspirations to expand to gigawatt-scale by 2035, the joint venture aims to catalyse Bangladesh’s clean energy shift, particularly through utility-scale and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar deployments.

As the RMG sector looks to cut energy costs and enhance energy security, this landmark initiative could redefine Bangladesh’s energy landscape—positioning the country as a renewable energy hub in South Asia and accelerating its path toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.
