Bangladesh hopes for fairer US tariff deal in ongoing talks

Bangladesh has expressed optimism about securing a fairer tariff rate for its exports to the US, as three-day negotiations with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) began in Washington, DC on Tuesday. The talks aim to finalize a revised tariff deal before July 31, 2025, to avoid the scheduled 35% tariff on Bangladeshi products set to take effect on August 1, 2025.
Leading the Bangladeshi delegation is Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin, accompanied by National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, and Additional Secretary Nazneen Kawshar Chowdhury.
Commerce Secretary Rahman stated that progress is being made and the team is hopeful of achieving favorable tariff reductions. The second round of discussions is scheduled for Wednesday morning (US time), with both sides working toward a mutually beneficial agreement.
