G20 summit marks turning point for Africa’s textile & apparel industry

Africa’s first participation as a permanent G20 member is expected to boost the continent’s textile and apparel sector, even though no industry-specific policies were announced.

G20 commitments on sustainability, debt reform, digitalisation, and infrastructure investment are set to strengthen Africa’s competitiveness as a sourcing hub. Improved financing and upgraded transport networks could lower production and logistics costs, while new digital and traceability standards will help African exporters meet EU and US compliance requirements.

With global brands seeking diversified, low-carbon supply chains, industry analysts predict increased investment in African textile parks, integrated cotton-to-garment facilities, and regional value chains under AfCFTA.

The summit signals a broader shift in global fashion sourcing—positioning Africa as an emerging, stable, and sustainable manufacturing destination.
