NWI and Oerlikon Nonwoven announce meltblown technology collaboration

The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) at North Carolina State University and Oerlikon Nonwoven have announced a new partnership focused on advancing meltblown laboratory technology.

The collaboration was formalized at ITMA Asia + CITME in Singapore by Professor Raoul Farer, Executive Deputy Director of NWI, and Dr. Ingo Mählmann, Sales Director Nonwoven at Oerlikon Neumag.

As the first step, NWI will install Oerlikon’s hycuTEC hydrocharging system within its laboratory facilities, enabling the creation of a cutting-edge meltblown hydrocharging lab. This upgrade will support the development of next-generation products, especially in air filtration media, while offering North American customers access to hycuTEC testing and product development opportunities.

Oerlikon’s patented hycuTEC technology — which won the 2023 Edana Filtrex Innovation Award — enhances filtration performance using a fine mist of demineralized water to produce highly efficient electret media with 99.99% filtration efficiency at low pressure drop.

The partnership marks a significant step in strengthening research, innovation and customer support within the global nonwoven filtration sector.
