Export through land ports slowed down due to unrest in the country

Due to the ongoing curfew and unrest, operations at the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria, one of Bangladesh’s key export hubs, have significantly slowed down. In the past six days, exports to India through this port have halved, resulting in substantial revenue losses for the government. Business activities are disrupted by internet service issues and the overall situation, limiting exports to just minimal amounts of fish and cement.

Normally, the Akhaura land port is busy with trucks and pickups transporting goods, but it is now quiet due to the situation surrounding the quota reform protests. The disruptions in internet services and the nationwide curfew have severely impacted the export trade. Under normal conditions, the port exports around $200,000 worth of goods, including frozen fish, rods, cement, plastic, and furniture, to India. However, in the last six days, only 53 tons of fish and 70 tons of cement have been exported, earning about 16.5 million BDT.

Businesses are facing financial losses, and the government is losing revenue. Business owners are urging for a quick return to normalcy.
