Climate Action Day

Greetings Earthlings

I hope by now it’s clear that, at Shimmy, we are big on action and decided that Climate Action Day was the perfect time to share some new news with you.

We believe that every sustainability goal should be purposeful and tied to a company’s sphere of influence – be it the emissions associated with doing business and how a company’s product can actually be used for carbon reduction or climate adaptations.

Like many, we read Cornell’s excellent Higher Ground? Report with a combination of alarm and sadness. The report details the impacts of high heat and humidity days as well as flooding in several of the cities where Shimmy is actively training workers with skills to keep them safe from automation-related job displacement.

Any of the over 11,000 workers who have trained with Shimmy can opt-in for more free machine training from our platform to be sent to their mobile devices.

And last week, we launched a new set of modules focused on teaching workers climate adaptation skills to try and help workers with other huge shifts impacting their safety and livelihoods.

We cover topics like:

  • how to recognize heat stroke,
  • how to protect yourself on high heat and humidity days, and
  • what you can expect from your employers, etc.

We’ve also collected data from workers we trained in the Oporajita Program to learn how high heat, humidity, and flooding impact them at work and home. We’ve shared some of those insights on our website.

This is a new commitment for us, but one we expect to grow over time. Please get in touch if we can help extend this training to workers you serve.

I want to give big thanks to Francesca Britton and Chelsea Sabri who were instrumental in bringing this new training direction to life and to the folks at Cornell ILR for inspiring us to expand the ways in which we serve workers.

Wishing you an inspiring, impactful Climate Action Day!

Your friends at Shimmy
