BGMEA administrator’s tenure extended to ensure fair election

The interim government has extended the tenure of Md Anwar Hossain, administrator of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), by four months to facilitate the trade body’s biennial election.
According to a recent circular issued by the commerce ministry, Mr. Hossain, who is also the vice-chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau, will continue in his role until June 16, 2025, effective from February 17.
Mr. Hossain was initially appointed after the resignation of elected BGMEA president SM Mannan Kochi on August 24 last year. Although a new board was formed following Kochi’s departure, the commerce ministry later declared the formation process flawed. The reconstituted board also failed to address complaints from general members, prompting the government’s intervention.
As per his mandate, Hossain was expected to ensure a fair election within 120 days of his appointment. However, due to delays, the election has yet to take place, leading to the decision to extend his tenure.
