EDANA warns against EU countermeasures on US tariffs, Nonwoven at risk

EDANA, the global association representing over 250 companies in the nonwovens sector, has cautioned that proposed EU countermeasures to recent US tariffs could significantly disrupt essential supply chains.
The association emphasized the EU’s heavy reliance on US fluff pulp, which accounts for over 80% of imports in this category. It urged the European Commission to reconsider any actions that could increase costs, restrict supply chains, and negatively impact vulnerable communities.
EDANA has voiced serious concerns over the European Commission’s potential decision to impose retaliatory tariffs in response to US duties on EU steel, aluminium, and certain derived products. As the representative body for a vast network of nonwovens manufacturers and suppliers, EDANA is closely monitoring the situation to assess the potential industry-wide impact.
Nonwovens—high-tech, fiber-based fabrics—are crucial in manufacturing essential products such as surgical masks, baby diapers, disinfectant wipes, and automotive insulation. These materials are vital to sectors including hygiene, healthcare, construction, and filtration. While recognizing the European Commission’s goal of protecting EU industries, EDANA has joined other industry groups in warning against unintended consequences of retaliatory measures. The association stresses that any disruption to fluff pulp supply chains could have far-reaching effects, including higher production costs and potential shortages of essential goods across Europe.
