BEZA will set up desalination plants in coaster Economic Zones
Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza) is strategizing to address water demand in coastal economic zones by planning to establish desalination plants. Executive Chairman Shaikh Yusuf Harun outlined short, medium, and long-term water supply plans, including collecting water from Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) and future desalination plant setups. Given the challenges posed by coastal locations like Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN) and others, water management is crucial. Harun cited a study projecting a demand of around 1,000 MLD of water by 2040 for BSMSN alone.
Beza currently provides 50 MLD through deep tube wells and surface water treatment plants, with plans for an additional 100 MLD from two treatment plants. Construction is underway for one, and the other is in process. Furthermore, there’s a plan to supply another 500 MLD from the confluence of the Meghna and Dakatia rivers to BSMSN. Nivedita Bose from Pacific DuPont Water Solution highlighted water’s critical role in industry, affecting production uptime and profitability.
