Power Grid completion in Vietnam to prevent power outages
Vietnam Electricity has completed new transmission lines to enhance power supply from central Vietnam to the north, aiming to prevent costly blackouts. The project, which typically takes three to four years, was fast-tracked to just half a year under the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
The 500-kilovolt lines, costing over 22 trillion dong ($884 million), stretch more than 500 kilometers across nine provinces. This upgrade doubles the supply capacity to 5,000 megawatts, addressing chronic power shortages in northern Vietnam, which relies heavily on hydroelectricity and has been vulnerable to outages due to unreliable north-south grid connections. The new lines will improve energy stability and support business investment in the region.
