Bangladesh targets 18 key markets to diversify exports

Bangladesh is developing a national strategy to diversify its export products and overseas markets, aiming to reduce reliance on readymade garments (RMG) and expand exports of services, technology and skill-based products.
Speaking at a consultation workshop at the Commerce Ministry in Dhaka, Commerce Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan said the government is analysing 18 major trading destinations to prepare country-specific export action plans. The assessment will examine market potential, tariff and non-tariff barriers, competitors and policy measures needed to improve market access.
Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Distinguished Fellow Dr. Mustafizur Rahman stressed the importance of developing service exports, particularly information technology and skill-based services. He also called for greater investment in skills development, technology adoption and regional trade with South and Southeast Asian countries.
Representatives from BGMEA, the Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Walton Group, Bangladesh Agro-Processors Association and other sectors discussed opportunities to expand exports of pharmaceuticals, electronics, agro-processed products, leather goods, light engineering and IT-enabled services.
The initiative aims to strengthen Bangladesh’s export competitiveness by broadening its product base and reaching new international markets.
