Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Mahmud Hasan Khan has urged Pakistan to increase imports of Bangladeshi products, particularly jute yarn and pharmaceuticals, to help reduce the bilateral trade gap and expand economic cooperation between the two countries.

He made the call during a meeting with Pakistani High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haidar at the BGMEA office in Uttara, Dhaka.

Mahmud Hasan Khan noted that Bangladesh imports significant quantities of raw materials, including chemicals and dyes, from Pakistan for its ready-made garment (RMG) industry, while Bangladeshi exports to Pakistan remain comparatively low.

To address the imbalance, he proposed greater imports of essential apparel-sector chemicals and dyes from Pakistan while encouraging Pakistan to expand its purchases of Bangladeshi jute yarn and internationally recognised pharmaceutical products.

High Commissioner Imran Haidar expressed interest in the proposals and assured the BGMEA leadership that the High Commission would take steps to facilitate stronger two-way trade.

The Pakistani envoy also stressed the importance of business-to-business engagement and high-level trade delegations to identify new market opportunities.

He said that if a Bangladeshi business delegation comprising RMG and other exporters visits Pakistan, the High Commission will facilitate dedicated B2B meetings and matchmaking sessions with leading Pakistani importers, brands, buyers and trade organisations.

Both sides discussed the potential for closer business engagement and greater diversification of bilateral trade beyond the existing areas of commerce.
